Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

My new favourite alien book! Alienated is such a refreshing new YA - I love Melissa's writing style and the humour infused in her novel. Plus, this is her debut! I have a strong feeling this will be one of the best YA debuts of 2014. It's got amazing characters, a super intriguing premise, and loads of action and suspense. I'm already hooked onto this new series!

I actually tried to hold off reading this book as long as I could, because I knew I'd be impatiently waiting for the next one right after I finished it. I guess I couldn't help myself as this beautiful cover stared at me from my shelf, because I read it in September, all in one go. That's right, no breaks! This book is that riveting. I seriously couldn't take my eyes off the pages. Melissa's writing is so incredibly vivid - I could see everything happening in my mind like it was all right in front of me. I loved it!

Cara's pretty shocked when she finds out she's chosen to host the very first L'eihr in the States. She knows it'll be great for her and her blog - an amazing experience, but what she isn't banking on is her social downfall. HALO - Humans Against L'eihr Occupation will not condone this exchange program, and Cara and Aelyx are both in danger. Cara finds comfort and a friend in Aelyx, and soon it's the two of them against the world. Quite literally. Before they know it, they start falling for each other. But a human and a L'eihr in love isn't the best thing to advertise in the growing unrest. Cara has to make a decision, and so does Aelyx. But will they make the right one?

Cara is what I'd call a high flyer. She's super smart, valedictorian, captain of the debate team, chess club, etc. etc. But she also has an amazing personality. She's sweet, generous, and really down-to-earth. And pretty snarky, too! I loved her humour. Cara's also not afraid of saying what she thinks, and she doesn't take anyone's crap. She's honest and tough, and I really like that in YA heroines. Plus, I think it's adorable that Cara tries so hard to make Aelyx feel at home in her house. She's genuinely caring, and of course Aelyx can't resist that!

And now let's come to Aelyx. He's my new favourite book boyfriend! I loved his development throughout the novel - he goes from an uncaring alien who'll do anything to stop the alliance to someone who'll fight like hell to make sure it carries on. He intrigued me so much, and I loved finding out more about him and his people. He's quite an enigma in the beginning, but he starts to soften up soon enough, thanks to Cara. And the way he feels for her is so incredibly amazing. He really and truly cares for her, and I went all gooey inside at some moments.

I found Cara's two (and pretty much only) human friends really interesting, too. Eric is Cara's boyfriend for a while, and though he seems like a douche, there's a cool guy underneath - a guy Cara misses terribly. I did like him towards the end, and I'm hoping to see more of him in the next book. Tori is Cara's best friend, and she has a tough exterior right from the start. She doesn't care what people think of her, and I liked that. Of course, her demeanor changes with the increased protests against Aelyx, but I think there's hope for her go back to who she was.

What I really love about Alienated is that Melissa gives us so much information about the L'eihrs! It's all so fascinating, learning about what they're like right alongside Cara. It really makes me feel like I'm a part of their journey, too. And it's beautiful seeing the relationship develop between Cara and Aelyx. From total strangers of two different species, to friends, to a boy and a girl who'd do anything for one another.

The plot is perfectly paced and so well-done. There's never a dull moment at all, and I found myself turning every page eagerly. The characters are beautifully developed, the romance is fantastic, and the ending was great, too! I'm definitely itching for the sequel, which I know will be just as good. But I have absolutely no idea what could happen in it! That's another thing I love, the unpredictability of this series. Melissa kept me guessing at every turn. Alienated is a 2014 must-read, I have no doubt about it. All of you sci-fi and romance fans, you'll love this one!
