Sara had always been careful.
She never spoke of magic, never associated with those suspected of handling magic, never thought of magic, and never, ever, let anyone see her mark. After all, the last thing she wanted was to end up missing, like her father and brother.
Then, a silver elf pushed his way into Sara's dream, and her life became anything but ordinary.

Before reading Copper Girl, I actually thought this was a YA book, so I was kind of surprised to find that it wasn't. But I still enjoyed it, and I really liked the concept. I love fantasy books of all kinds, so it was easy to get into this. Jennifer Allis Provost introduces some really unique notions in this book, which I found quite fascinating! I do hope that we'll get to find out more background in the sequel, though.

We aren't told much at the beginning of the book, so most of the thoughts and events came as a surprise to me. Sara is an Elemental, but she's spent all her adult life trying to hide it, because of the magic wars. But then Micah, an elf, shows up in her dreams, and immediately recognizes her for what she is. Micah draws Sara back into a world she's spent years trying to forget, and she soon begins to discover things about herself and her family that she'd never known before.

I really tried to like Sara, because I usually make it a point to connect with the protagonist of the book, but I just couldn't. I do like some aspects of her, like her complete loyalty towards her family as well as her courage, but I didn't manage to relate to her. Firstly, I didn't get how she became so infatuated with Micah. Smallish spoiler alert - She realizes that she loves Micah after knowing him only a week. A week! I don't get it. Both of them seem to hit it off immediately, and I mean right from the first time he appears in her dream. And from then on they're inseparable.

But I did like Micah a lot. He kind of reminded me of Ash from The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. He talks all formally, and I find it adorable how he doesn't know anything about the mortal world! Anyway, Micah is really protective of Sara which I found really sweet, but I'm still stymied about how he got to care for her so much in just a few days. One thing - and probably the only thing - I didn't like about Micah was that he kept calling Sara 'my Sara.' It's fine once or twice, but he says it pretty much all the time! Micah's incredibly sweet and lovable, though, so I overlooked that.

There's a whole mix of magical politics, action, revelation and betrayal in Copper Girl. I don't think I saw any of it coming! That's another thing I really like about this book - it's totally unpredictable. You have no idea what's coming next. From finding out who Micah really is, to finding out who Sara really is, to finding out all sorts of other things about the Elementals... It's crazy! There's one hell of a roller coaster, and I really enjoyed that. Some aspects were a bit confusing, though, and I wasn't sure what their purpose was in the book. I don't know what to expect in the sequel, but I know that I will definitely be reading it to find out what happens.
