Author Interview: Courtney Cole

Help me welcome Courtney Cole, author of If You Stay, on the blog today! I read If You Stay about a week ago, and jumped at the chance to interview Courtney here at City of Books. You can check out my review here.

Interview with Courtney Cole

It's so great to have you here on the blog, Courtney! I absolutely loved If You Stay. For those who haven't read it yet, can you describe your book in 5 words?
Thank you so much for having me, Richa!! Five words? Um... gritty, raw, emotional, hopeful, beautiful.  At least, I hope so :)

I totally agree with that! Why did you decide to write NA?
I think it suits my voice. Plus, I love that the 20-something crowd still have issues to work through- and I get to write sex scenes. While I love writing YA also, with NA, I don't have to worry about toeing that line of 'appropriateness' that I worry about with YA.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Yes. I always knew I loved to write. In my twenties, I didn't pursue it because I thought it would be too challenging to make a living at it. But it really is my calling and I'm so happy that I chose to chase the dream.

How did you come up with Pax's character?
A lot of Pax's personality is based on someone very near to me. But also, I came up with the character because of a news story that I heard years ago. A mother and a son were faced with an intruder, much the same as Pax and his mom. Only in real life, the mom and son got away. I started wondering what would have happened to the boy if the mother had been killed.. and I decided that he would have wanted to live in oblivion.... just like Pax.

When can we expect the companion novel, If You Leave, and can you tell us a little something about it?
I don't have a release date yet. But it will follow Madison Hill and Gabriel Vincent. Madison has trust issues and Gabriel has a secret... two things that don't go well together. It should be an interesting story.

I can't wait to read Madison's story! What's your favourite place to read?
Anywhere that is quiet. I hate to read in a noisy room.

What can you be found doing when you're not writing?
Reading. Or out for a walk.

Now for a few favourites:

Favourite animal?
My cat, Cleocatra. We affectionately call her Ninja Kitty. She's a stealthy little ninja.

Favourite ice cream flavour?
Red Velvet Cake from Urban Swirl.

Favourite movie genre?
Hmm. Depends on my mood. Usually romantic comedy, but sometimes I'm in the mood for something deeper.

Favourite candy?
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Favourite actor?
Alex Pettyfer (In my head, he's Pax. :)

And that's a wrap! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, Courtney :)
Thank you so much, Richa. It was such a pleasure being here!!

About Courtney Cole

Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast    if she could. She has a degree in Business, but has since discovered that corporate America is not nearly as fun to live in as fictional worlds. She loves chocolate and roller coasters and hates waiting and rude people.

Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.

About If You Stay
24-year old Pax Tate is an asshole.

He’s a tattooed, rock-hard bad-boy with a bad attitude to match.

But he’s got his reasons.

His mother died when Pax was seven, leaving a hole in his heart filled with guilt although he doesn’t understand why. What he does know is that he and his dad are left alone and with more issues than they can count.

As Pax grew up, he tried to be the kid his father always wanted; the perfect golden boy, but it didn’t work. His dad couldn’t overcome his grief long enough to notice and Pax couldn’t keep up the impossible perfect façade.

So he slipped far, far from it.

Now, he uses drugs and women to cope with the ugliness, the black void that he doesn’t want to deal with. If he pretends that the emptiness isn’t there, then it isn’t, right?

And it’s never more apparent than when he meets Mila.

Sweet, beautiful Mila Hill is the fresh air to his hardened frown, the beauty to his ugly heart. He doesn’t know how to not hurt her, but he quickly realizes that he’s got to figure it out because he needs her to breathe.

When memories of his mother’s death resurface from where he’s repressed them for so long, Mila is there to catch him when the guilt starts making sense. Mila is the one…the one who can save him from his broken troubled heart; from his issues, from the emptiness.

But only if he can stop being an asshole long enough to allow it.

He knows that. And he’s working on it.

But is that enough to make her stay?
